Job Summary:

This Bylaw Enforcement Officer position plays a vital role in enforcing regulatory bylaws and supporting community-based law enforcement. If you possess excellent problem-solving skills, strong communication abilities, and a passion for public service, this opportunity may be perfect for you

Salary: $37.81 per hour

Key Responsibilities:
  • Enforcement and Compliance: Enforce regulatory bylaws and relevant Territorial Acts in collaboration with Territorial agencies and other City departments.
  • Problem-Solving: Identify bylaw-related offences, research and recommend solutions through bylaws, zoning regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Animal Shelter Operations: Operate and maintain the animal shelter, ensuring its cleanliness and adherence to standard operating procedures.
  • Investigations and Prosecutions: Investigate incidents, gather evidence, determine if there is sufficient evidence to prosecute, prepare documents, lay charges if warranted, serve summons, give evidence under oath, and attend court as required.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in Community-based Law Enforcement or a related field.
  • 6 months on-the-job training.
  • Excellent team-building, human relations, and problem-solving skills.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's license.

Education and Training:

  • Conflict Resolution Core courses (72 hours) - Dealing with Anger, Conflict Management & Negotiation Level 1.
  • A Firearm Acquisition and Possession certificate.
  • Traffic Control Training (16 hours).

Equipment Operation: Ability to operate various equipment such as vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, snow-mobiles, trailers, firearms, animal traps, shelter equipment, photo-evidence equipment, pepper spray, catch poles, tranquillizer guns, and general office equipment with proficiency in ERP software programs, spreadsheets, electronic mail, word processing, etc.

Other Requirements:

  • Candidates must have valid and current licenses/certifications/education matching the position requirements at the time of application.
  • Varying tests and/or exams may be administered as part of the recruiting process.

Work Environment: This position is based in the beautiful city of Whitehorse and requires working in-person.
