Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Underwriter Manager to join our team at Empire Life. As a key member of our Group Operations team, you will be responsible for leading the technical performance, auditing, learning and development of all underwriting team members.

About the Role

In this role, you will be guided by defined goals and objectives and work under the general supervision of the Director of Underwriting. You will assess financial risk and exposure for group insurance benefit products, comparing company financial condition, participation rates, industry type, employee group characteristics, and past claims experience to determine benefit levels and premium rates. You will also approve the sale of group benefits policies, ensuring compliance with company and reinsurer guidelines, as well as governmental regulations.

You will use your experience and judgment, in conjunction with underwriting guidelines, product knowledge, and government regulations, to determine optimal solutions to meet customer needs. You will develop, maintain, and ensure that underwriters adhere to sound underwriting philosophy and practices within predetermined company guidelines. You will also act as a subject matter expert and external technical point of contact for key high-value partnerships, often consulting on methodology, acquisition, retention, and profitability measures.

Responsibilities

* Assess financial risk and exposure for group insurance benefit products
* Approve the sale of group benefits policies
* Develop and maintain underwriting guidelines and procedures
* Act as a subject matter expert and external technical point of contact for key high-value partnerships
* Support review, internal coaching, exception handling, and external stakeholder management for complex cases
* Provide consultation and problem resolution for business units and sales teams on complex risk scenarios

Requirements

We are looking for someone with 10+ years of experience underwriting group business at a senior level, with proven knowledge of group benefits products, contractual provisions, risk assessment, and pricing methodologies. You should have a strong ability to drive independent initiatives and contribute to evolving the state of effective organization, digital transformation, process optimization, and product evolution. You should also have excellent communication, negotiation, persuasion, and presentation skills, as well as the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.

Location

This position can be based remotely or in one of our locations across Canada. Salary: $120,000 - $180,000 per year, depending on experience.
