Job Description

As a Family Building Specialist, you will provide critical support to vulnerable children and families with Children and Family Services involvement. Your primary caseload will consist of Indigenous families and individuals who have experienced trauma and multigenerational abuse and neglect.

You will work collaboratively with parents using basic counselling skills and a trauma-informed care approach. You will be responsible for coordinating, initiating, and mobilizing internal and external resources required to meet service plan objectives.

- Support family time between children in care and their parents and/or significant others in their life.

- Amplify caregivers' strengths while modelling and teaching parenting skills, child development, play, structure and routine, and positive discipline.

- Support children and parents to connect with their culture and facilitate Indigenous families' participation in ceremony.

- Identify, strengthen, and reconnect relationships with family, kin, and friends to create long-term support for the wellbeing, reunification, and safety of the children.

- Initiate and facilitate family support network meetings.

- Assess ongoing risk for children and families receiving services as per the Child Youth and Family Enhancement Act (CYFEA).

- Transport parents and children as needed between appointments and scheduled family time.

- Complete formal documentation and ensure file standards are met.

- Provide on-call support to families 24/7 on a rotational basis.

  • Build therapeutic relationships with parents and other relevant parties
  • Provide emotional support and guidance to families in need
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of case work
  • Collaborate with community resources to achieve service plan objectives

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Degree in Child & Youth Care, Social Work, or related field
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, preferably Indigenous families
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
