Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow

At the University of British Columbia (UBC), we are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our team in the Department of Emergency Medicine. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge research project focused on real-world drug safety and surveillance using new adverse drug event data generated by a technological intervention designed to improve clinical communication of patients' adverse drug events.

Job Summary

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be responsible for conducting pharmacoepidemiology research, designing and leading studies, and analyzing data to quantify and compare safety risks and effectiveness between drugs. The incumbent will also participate in research opportunities through the Canadian Emergency Department Research Network (CEDRN) and contribute to the development of a new approach for post-market drug safety surveillance.

Responsibilities
  1. Design and lead studies using ActionADE data generated as a by-product of safer clinical care to help develop a new approach for post-market drug safety surveillance.
  2. Apply appropriate pharmacoepidemiology methods to develop a timely robust drug safety sentinel surveillance system.
  3. Participate in research opportunities through the Canadian Emergency Department Research Network (CEDRN).
  4. Contribute to the development of a new approach for post-market drug safety surveillance.
  5. Collaborate with the research team to identify real or potential problems and work to resolve these issues.
  6. Contribute to and/or lead abstract, manuscript writing, presentations for submission to selected journals/conferences and grant proposals.
Qualifications
  1. PhD in a relevant discipline required.
  2. Relevant research experience in epidemiology; pharmacoepidemiology using qualitative or mixed methods; sociology and/or anthropology of medicine; health informatics; applied science, technology and society perspectives.
  3. Ability and experience in the area of pharmacoepidemiology and clinical research coordination.
  4. Experience collecting and analyzing quantitative (mixed methods) data.
  5. Ability to balance multiple commitments, short deadlines and sensitive clinical or research issues.
  6. Excellent communication skills, including strong writing, research and interpersonal skills.
  7. Innovative and creative thinking and a logical approach to problem solving are also necessary.
  8. Self-directed, self-motivated and independent work skills.
  9. Ability to work as part of a team.
  10. Preference will be given to applicants with intermediate or advanced computer skills in the following software packages: MS Office (particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and NVivo (qualitative data software package).
  11. Experience with information technology in the health sector is considered an asset.
  12. Familiarity with the field of drug safety, adverse drug event reporting, pharmacy practice, health technology implementations, health system research or other potential research partners is an asset.
  13. Familiarity and experience with grant funded projects and study protocol requirements including ethical conduct, ethics approval process, standard operating procedures, source documentation and good clinical practice is an asset.

This is a 1.0 FTE position for a one-year term, subject to renewal. The successful applicant will report to Dr. Corinne Hohl, Associate Professor in the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine.
