Position Overview

The City of Lethbridge is seeking applications for the role of Emergency Communications Specialist within the Public Safety Communications Centre (PSCC). This is a non-permanent, casual position designed for individuals who are dedicated to delivering exceptional public service.

Compensation: $33.92 per hour

Employment Status: Temporary, Casual

Work Schedule:

  • Casual employees will be required to fill short notice shift vacancies as needed.
  • Schedules will be provided based on operational demands, covering breaks, leaves, and other absences.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and during peak vacation times is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • As an Emergency Communications Specialist, you will manage and dispatch both emergency and non-emergency calls for Police and Fire services.
  • Provide guidance and support to callers by following established protocols and procedures.
  • Utilize a Computer Aided Dispatch System and other software, while also monitoring radio communications.
  • Perform various support tasks related to the continuous operations of the Public Safety Communications Centre.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma is required.
  • Proficiency in data entry and retrieval, with a typing speed of at least 40 words per minute.
  • Familiarity with Hexagon CAD systems and IAED Protocol Software is advantageous.
  • Preference may be given to candidates certified by the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch.
  • Knowledge of geographical areas in Lethbridge and its surroundings is a significant asset.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills are essential; the ability to remain calm and prioritize tasks during emergencies is crucial.
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR certification or a higher equivalent is required prior to employment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must successfully complete a police security clearance, including a criminal background check and reference checks.
  • Applicants must have a clean record for at least one year, free from any criminal activity or illegal drug use.
  • Availability for industry-related aptitude, hearing, typing tests, and psychological assessments is necessary.

Probationary Period:

  • During the training and 12-month probationary period, candidates must be available for full-time hours to gain comprehensive knowledge of 9-1-1 telecommunications and dispatch systems.
