Position Overview

The City of Lethbridge is seeking applications for the role of Emergency Communications Specialist within the Public Safety Communications Centre (PSCC). This is a non-permanent, casual position aimed at individuals who are dedicated to delivering outstanding public service.

Compensation: $33.92 per hour

Employment Status: Temporary, Casual

Work Schedule:

  • Casual staff will be required to sign up for short-notice shift openings and will receive a schedule based on operational demands.
  • Positions will be scheduled to cover breaks, leaves, and absences due to various reasons.
  • Work hours will fluctuate according to operational needs, requiring availability for nights, weekends, holidays, and peak vacation times.

Key Responsibilities:

  • As an Emergency Communications Specialist for Lethbridge 9-1-1, you will be tasked with processing and dispatching both emergency and non-emergency calls for Police and Fire services.
  • You will provide guidance and support to callers following established protocols and procedures.
  • Utilization of a Computer Aided Dispatch System and other software will be essential, along with monitoring incoming and outgoing radio communications.
  • Additional general support duties related to the 24-hour operations of the Public Safety Communications Centre will also be required.

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Proficiency in data entry and retrieval, with a typing speed of at least 40 words per minute.
  • Familiarity with Hexagon CAD systems and IAED Protocol Software is advantageous.
  • Preference may be given to candidates certified by the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch.
  • A solid understanding of geographical areas within Lethbridge and its surroundings is beneficial.
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to remain calm and prioritize tasks during emergencies.
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR qualifications or a higher equivalent are required prior to employment commencement.

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must consent to and successfully pass a police security clearance, which includes a personal disclosure form, criminal and police records check, reference checks, and a truth verification process.
  • A minimum of one year free from any detected or undetected criminal activity is required for consideration.
  • Applicants will need to be available for aptitude, hearing, typing tests, as well as a psychological assessment and interview.

Probationary Period:

  • During the training and the 12-month probationary period, candidates must be available for full-time hours, including shift work, to gain comprehensive knowledge of 9-1-1 telecommunications and dispatch systems in an emergency services context.
