The Laboratory and Controlled Substances Supervisor at Covanta is a critical position that oversees the operations of our licensed teams, ensuring strict compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements. This role is instrumental in upholding the facility's waste analysis plan and ensuring its thorough evaluation and compliance.
Main FunctionsAs the Laboratory and Controlled Substances Supervisor, you will be responsible for overseeing critical onsite laboratory operations and testing procedures essential to our facility's functioning. Your key responsibilities include:
- Leading laboratory activities and programs, managing records, and providing technical support for equipment and data analysis tools.
- Conducting comprehensive analysis of incoming samples, meticulously documenting results both physically and digitally.
- Conducting bench studies (treatability tests) on waste materials, innovating new methods, and ensuring safe waste management practices.
- Providing expert guidance on operational activities and regulatory compliance.
- Managing inventory of laboratory equipment, supplies, and analysis tools.
- Evaluating treatability of new samples and upholding laboratory cleanliness standards.
- Ensuring strict adherence to health and safety standards while actively supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assisting with sample preparation, analyses, and coordination with production personnel.
- Supporting laboratory, sales, and operations teams with technical expertise and problem-solving.
- Managing discrepancies in incoming and outgoing materials and maintaining precise records.
- Reviewing analytical reports to verify compliance with disposal site parameters.
- Assisting in Emergency Spill Response (ER) procedures and overseeing receipt, destruction, and disposal of cannabis and precursor shipments.
- Preparing necessary documentation for cannabis deliveries in strict compliance with regulations.
- Ensuring proper storage of cannabis and precursors in accordance with Health Canada regulations.
- Addressing customer requirements related to cannabis and precursors professionally and efficiently.
- Participating in physical inventory checks of cannabis products and meticulously documenting any discrepancies.
- Coordinating with Health Canada and leading on-site visits or audits as required.
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess:
- A post-secondary degree in a related scientific discipline (chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, chemical engineering, medicine, or dentistry) from a Canadian university or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5-8 years of experience as a laboratory chemist.
- Preferred leadership experience (1-3 years).
- Familiarity with Canadian pharmaceutical industry practices is an asset.
- Willingness to acquire expertise in Cannabis Regulations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledgeable in safety requirements and proficient in handling laboratory equipment.
- Strong organizational and priority management skills.
- Ability to wear a cartridge mask on a weekly basis.
- Possess a valid driver's license.
- Experience handling both non-hazardous and hazardous waste.
- Familiarity with hand tools, hand trucks, and forklifts preferred.
- Ability to collaborate effectively and communicate appropriately across diverse audiences.
