Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Tax Manager or Senior Manager to join our Indigenous Client Services group at KPMG Canada. As a key member of our team, you will work closely with our Partners on tax-related matters, including planning, due diligence, M&A, compliance, and tax-exempt status requirements. Your expertise will enable you to direct the work of junior staff, review their work for accuracy and completeness, and provide technical knowledge and insights to our clients.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Work in partnership with First Nations clients and Indigenous-led organizations to support client engagements.
  2. Collaborate with our team as a senior member on tax planning work for clients.
  3. Utilize an understanding of the Indian Act as a component of work with clients.
  4. Plan and organize teams for the preparation of tax returns and conducting and presenting tax research.
  5. Advise on planning opportunities, tax minimization strategies, and compliance issues.
  6. Advise on tax exemptions under Section 87 of the Indian Act and potential tax exemptions available within Section 149 of the Income Tax Act.
  7. Review the work of junior staff for accuracy and completeness.
  8. Become part of the tax engagement team in servicing the needs of clients.
  9. Provide ongoing support and mentoring for the professional development of staff.
  10. Build and maintain mutually respectful relationships with Indigenous clients in First Nations Communities, businesses, non-profit, and entrepreneurship roles.

Requirements

  1. Professional accounting designation.
  2. A minimum of 5 years specializing in tax in public accounting would be an asset.
  3. Enrollment in or completion of the CPA In-Depth Tax program would be an asset.
  4. Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Culture, Governance, Treaties, and Rights, Reconciliation, and Indigenous History in Canada.
  5. Experience working directly with Indigenous communities, governments, and associations.
  6. Knowledge of the Indian Act and associated tax implications.
  7. Knowledge of Section 149 tax exemptions of the Income Tax Act.
  8. Knowledge of the taxation of trusts and their beneficiaries and partnerships and their partners.
  9. Knowledge of structuring Indigenous businesses to preserve tax exemptions.
  10. Experience with due diligence, M&A, and structuring Indigenous and Non-Indigenous business relationships would be an asset.
  11. Excellent people management skills.
  12. Highly motivated individual with a desire for growth.
  13. Excellent client service skills with the ability to understand the client's business.
  14. Dedication and motivation to achieve high standards of client service and professionalism in the performance of duties.
  15. Emphasis on quality and adding value in client offerings and services.
  16. Strong project management and organizational skills.
