Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Recreation Therapist Assistant to join our team at PHSA. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of recreation therapy programs to patients at BC Children's Hospital and SunnyHill Health Centre.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Recreation Therapists in planning, implementing, and evaluating recreation therapy programs for patients.
  • Conduct individual and group activity programs, including arts and crafts, cooking, music, sports, games, and gardening.
  • Monitor and evaluate patient progress, reporting relevant observations to Recreation Therapists and other healthcare professionals.
  • Set up and organize equipment and supplies for activity programs.
  • Make adaptations to recreation activities and equipment as recommended by Recreation Therapists and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies, reporting any issues to designated personnel.
  • Prepare patients for activities, including assisting with clothing and personal supplies, and checking for potential contraindications.
  • Provide functional direction to volunteers during activity programs.
  • Transport patients on group outings, operating a passenger bus and maintaining records of distances traveled and vehicle maintenance.
  • Complete required reports and attend program meetings as directed.
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements.

Requirements

  • Grade 12, completion of a Recreation Therapy Program, and two years' recent experience in a related field.
  • Valid class 4 vehicle license (unrestricted).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, deal with others effectively, and teach.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada.
