Job Summary

Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking a Recreation Assistant to join the team at Evergreen House at Lions Gate Hospital. As a Recreation Assistant, you will work in a team-based environment to carry out recreation programs in consultation with the Recreation Therapist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Recreation Therapist in planning and implementing recreation programs for patients/clients/residents.
  • Organize and oversee patients/clients/residents on outings, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Coordinate the portering of patients/clients/residents to and from activities, maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Demonstrate techniques of recreation activities, adapting them to meet the needs of patients/clients/residents.
  • Carry out prescribed adaptations to recreation activities, enabling patients/clients/residents to maintain maximum potential for independence.
  • Provide functional direction to volunteers, ensuring they are aware of their roles and responsibilities.
  • Evaluate and report relevant observations of patients'/client's/residents' progress/participation to the Recreation Therapist or interdisciplinary team.
  • Organize furnishings and equipment for designated activities, maintaining inventory and ensuring they are in good working order.
  • May operate a bus with a passenger seating capacity of up to 25 passengers (including the driver) to transport patients/clients/residents to and from community participation activities as required by site/program.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Completion of a recognized Recreation Diploma Program or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to teach and demonstrate recreation activities.
  • Ability to organize work and prioritize tasks.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively, maintaining a positive and respectful attitude.
