About the Role

The Government of Alberta is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to fill the position of Director, Legislation and Strategic Planning within the Indigenous Health Division.

This is a key leadership role that requires a strong understanding of Indigenous health issues, policy development, and strategic planning. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team in developing and implementing strategies, policies, and legislation that improve the health status of Indigenous peoples and reduce the gap in health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Albertans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Strategic Direction: Provide strategic direction and perspectives that shape and inform the Ministry's approach to Indigenous health.
  • Relationship Building: Build relationships, partnerships, and foster a culture of trust among Indigenous health partners to achieve mutual goals.
  • Policy Development: Lead the development of legislation, policy, strategies, and actions to support improvements in Indigenous health status.
  • Team Leadership: Provide leadership and guidance to the unit to support development and implementation of the Indigenous Modernization of Alberta's Primary Health Care System (MAPS) recommendations.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Develop strategic relationships with system partners and stakeholders, including service providers, federal and other provincial governments, to support the development of policy advice, strategies, and research.
  • Operational Management: Ensure effective Unit operations and contribute to the effective operation of the Branch and Department, including all aspects of Unit and Branch management, including recruitment, coaching, development, supervision, and performance management.
Qualifications
  • Education: Hold a university degree (4 years), equivalency in related experience, in a related field (e.g. Health, Public, or Business Administration, Indigenous Relations, Political Science, Commerce, or related discipline).
  • Experience: Minimum of seven (7) years (11 years with no formal education) of progressively responsible supervisory experience, including experience with human resources management, budget, and forecasting, reporting up to senior leadership.
  • Indigenous Experience: Minimum of 5 years working with Indigenous peoples.
