About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Supervisor, Mechanical and Maintenance to join our team at VIA Rail. The successful candidate will oversee a team of trades employees and general workers, ensuring the efficient operation of the Equipment Maintenance teams at the Vancouver Maintenance Centre.

As a frontline leader, you will drive change and guide your team through dynamic improvements using a continuous improvement approach, while promoting a safe and supportive work environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Directs a team of unionized employees
  • Exhibits a soft skills coaching approach by being present on the shop floor to support and mobilize the team
  • Coordinates employee tasks and oversees progress during daily maintenance activities in partnership with the Lead Hand
  • Supervises the onboarding process (or departmental transition) and ensures that employees thoroughly understand the work environment, practices, tools, and health and safety regulations
  • Participates in the investigation process in accordance with the collective agreement
  • Delivers timely information, shares best practices, addresses operational concerns, and communicates company updates to foster transparency, clarify company direction and expectations, and create an engaging environment
  • Maintains a healthy work environment, fosters a positive culture, promotes employee engagement, and nurtures constructive labor relations with the union and various partners
Promoting Health and Safety
  • Consistently enforces health and safety regulations and promotes a workplace focused on health and safety
  • Ensures that all employees have completed their mandatory safety training
  • Enhances safety compliance and achieves better safety outcomes through regular safety observations. Provides feedback, rewards employees for safe performance, and addresses non-compliant behavior
Continuous Improvement
  • Tracks performance goals and suggests enhancements to existing methods and programs to boost productivity and operational efficiency
  • Maintains positive collaborative relationships among staff, contractors, and internal clients by promptly addressing issues as they arise
  • Oversees accurate and timely reporting of delays, identifies root causes, and proposes improvements
Overseeing Efficiency and Quality of Workmanship
  • Directs maintenance operations and guides the team in implementing a proactive maintenance strategy focused on executing planned and scheduled work
  • Responsible for managing the budget within his area, including expenditures on manpower, overtime, and materials
  • Guarantees train availability and reliability by optimizing team efficiency and maintaining high work quality

Requirements:

  • College diploma (DEC) or equivalent combination of technical studies and work experience (mechanical, electrical)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in managing multidisciplinary teams in a unionized environment
  • Familiar with Transport Canada Railway regulations (asset)
  • Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written (French is an asset)
  • Open to travel as needed to support operations at Mission
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite
