Job Description

At Providence Health Care, we are seeking a skilled Patient Care Aide, Tertiary Mental Health to join our team. As a valued member of our interdisciplinary care team, you will play a critical role in promoting a safe, respectful, and civil working environment for patients, residents, families, visitors, and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provides and/or assists patients with personal care, hygiene, and comfort, adhering to established care plans and following safety instructions and PHC policies and procedures.
  2. Creates a safe and respectful environment for patients by following established protocols and guidelines, including activities such as toileting, continence care, lifting and transferring, bathing, positioning, and ambulating.
  3. Develops and implements individualized and group leisure activities, such as arts and crafts, woodworking, gardening, sports, games, socio-cultural events, and social outings, to promote patient engagement and well-being.
  4. Performs tasks assigned by nursing staff, including taking weights, changing colostomy bags, applying medicated creams and non-sterile dressings, and collecting urine and stool specimens.
  5. Contributes to the overall evaluation of patients, supports continuity of care, and recognizes potential emergency situations, intervening as required.
  6. Establishes positive and courteous relationships with patients and families, providing comfort, respecting personal choices, and promoting patient involvement in decision-making.
  7. Assists patients with meals and nourishments, maintaining dietary restrictions and following PHC policies and procedures.
  8. Maintains a safe work environment, adhering to safety instructions and PHC policies and procedures, and reports problems to designated nursing staff.
  9. Handles, stores, and disposes of workplace hazardous materials in accordance with established procedures.
  10. Operates and/or cleans equipment related to patient care, including bathtubs, scales, mechanical lifts, bedpans, special mattresses, and personal care items.

Requirements:

  • Grade 10, graduation from a recognized Resident Care Attendant Program, and successful completion of an Acute Care Skills Program or three (3) months recent, related experience in an acute care and/or mental health acute care environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work, operate related equipment, and maintain a safe work environment.

Vaccination Requirement:

As per the current Public Health Orders, all employees working for Providence Health Care must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
