Aquatic Leadership Role

Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced Aquatic Leader to join our team at the City of Burnaby. As an Aquatic Leader, you will be responsible for assisting a supervisor in the provision of aquatic instructional and recreational programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and support the work of a moderate-sized group of lifeguards, instructors, and recreation attendants.
  • Participate in deck supervision, lesson supervision, and ensuring that pool areas and changeroom areas are clean, safe, and well-maintained.
  • Lead by example and be engaged in instructional, lifeguarding, maintenance, custodial, and clerical work.
  • Participate in the planning, organization, and promotion of aquatic programs, aquatic fitness programs, and special events.
  • Conduct swimming lessons, lifeguarding, and safety training programs for aquatic staff.
  • Participate in the hiring and evaluation of staff and volunteers.
  • Be responsible for emergency response and prepare and maintain various records and reports.

Requirements:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by courses in lifesaving, lifeguarding, aquatics instruction, and pool operation and maintenance.
  • Sound related experience, including some supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of lifesaving, lifeguarding, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, first aid, and teaching methods and group leadership techniques.
  • Knowledge of pool operations, including working knowledge of pool chemistry, water filtration, chlorination, heating, and related pool equipment and operating procedures.
  • Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia.
  • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor, National Lifeguard - Pool Award, and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate - Level C.
  • Additional certifications, such as Swim Instructor Trainer, National Lifeguard Instructor, First Aid Instructor, BCRPA Aquatic Fitness Leader, Pool Operator, etc., are an asset.

Working Conditions:

  • 48 hours bi-weekly (0.60 FTE)
  • Saturday to Sunday from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
  • Monday from 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM
