Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Waste Collection Operator to join our team at the City of Toronto. As a key member of our Environmental Services department, you will be responsible for operating a variety of collection vehicles and equipment to collect and transport waste and recyclables.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate a range of collection vehicles and equipment, including trucks and mechanical equipment, to collect and transport waste and recyclables.
  • Collect and load waste and recyclables into vehicles, using appropriate mechanisms to dump or manually lift materials.
  • Operate mechanical equipment attached to vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Lift and load garbage, recyclable materials, and other waste and recyclables into vehicles.
  • Place empty carts and containers back in their designated locations.
  • Assist operators by signaling vehicles when maneuvering or backing up.
  • Drive vehicles to designated disposal facilities and unload materials in accordance with facility requirements.
  • Perform daily pre-trip inspections and identify and report vehicle and equipment malfunctions.
  • Complete reports related to assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Operate two-way radios or mobile phones to communicate with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Perform other duties at this wage grade level or lower, such as laboring, maintenance, and cleaning activities.
Requirements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class D Driver's License with Z endorsement.
  • Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations for safe performance of duties.
  • Must possess and maintain any valid Province of Ontario requirements to operate mechanized equipment.
  • Good driving record and familiarity with major city streets.
  • Ability to work shift hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to use technical devices related to the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
  • Must be physically capable of performing required duties and able to work in all weather conditions.
