About the Clinical Trial Agreements Office

The Clinical Trial Agreements (CTA) Office is a large and expanding department within Research Legal at the University Health Network. The CTA Office facilitates approximately 2,000 contracts a year for research involving human participants. Thousands of research studies are undertaken at UHN every year, with some involving UHN researchers and clinicians only, and others involving third-parties such as pharmaceutical and medical device companies, government or funding agencies, contract research organizations, and other research institutions.

It is essential that appropriate legal agreements are in place to govern these relationships and manage risk to the University Health Network and UHN research participants.

Job Summary

The Research Agreement Specialist is a crucial member of the team responsible for preparing and negotiating legal agreements for UHN research studies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and administering a high volume of clinical trial agreements, research contracts/subcontracts, material transfer agreements, data-sharing agreements, and agreements with collaborating institutions, research consortia, non-profit organizations, affiliated institutions, and other universities.
  2. Developing agreement strategies and reviewing study submissions by researchers to determine study complexity and requirements.
  3. Engaging with key internal stakeholders such as the Research Ethics Board, Research Financial Services, and senior management for briefing and decision-making.
  4. Managing institutional risk and providing effective and efficient service and support to researchers from beginning to end.
  5. Developing SOPs and review tools.

Personal Attributes and Qualifications

  • Accurate and reliable.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Organized and efficient.
  • Ability to multitask and manage personal timelines with minimal supervision.
  • At least a bachelor's degree in law, business, or science, with a master's degree preferred.
  • At least three years of practical experience in a related field, with at least one year of on-the-job training.
  • Strong knowledge of contract clauses, legal concepts, and risk assessment.
  • Experience with clinical trial agreements, data transfer agreements, confidentiality agreements, study orders, and adaptive clinical trials.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Canadian legislation, regulations, and guidelines, as well as international privacy laws.
  • Knowledge of public and private organization grants and funding terms.
  • Ability to communicate and problem-solve effectively.
