About the Role
The Student Assistant, Peer Support Navigator is a vital member of the Douglas College community, providing support to students with lived experience in care. This role involves creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for students to thrive.
Key Responsibilities
- Connect with students to provide support and guidance with college processes and resources.
- Assist in planning and hosting monthly events to build community and enhance students' post-secondary experience.
- Help connect students with resources on and off campus, and work with these resources to enhance accessibility.
- Promote visibility of the Tuition Waiver Program and supports for youth in/from care.
- Support prospective and current students with the application process for the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program.
- Collaborate with other departments/teams as needed.
Requirements
- Demonstrate GPA academic standing of at least 2.3.
- Understand and knowledge of social justice concepts and colonialism.
- Has experienced at least one year of college-level study at Douglas College, and is a current student.
- Knowledge of the various resources and services available to students at Douglas College.
- Knowledge of the unique needs and experiences of students with lived experience in government care.
- Knowledge of the various resources, funding, and services available to students with lived experience in care.
- Knowledge of alternative school-based education.
- Understand and ability to practice trauma-informed practice.
- Able to work with a diverse student population.
- Basic computer skills.
- Good communication skills (written and oral).
- Self-motivated, demonstrating initiative, creativity, attention to detail.
- Familiar with bursaries and grants available for this student population.
Eligibility Criteria
Domestic students must meet one of the following criteria to be eligible to work in this role:
- Enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College throughout the work term.
- Been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the college in the term immediately following the work term.
- Enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. throughout the work term.
- Been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the institution in the term immediately following the work term.
International students must meet one of the following criteria to be eligible to work in this role:
- Enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College, throughout the academic year.
- An international student at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C., has a valid Study Permit that has the notation – "May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186 (F), (V) or (W). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria." Proof of enrollment in full-time studies from the other post-secondary institution is required.
