Peer Support Specialist

Northern Health Authority is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Peer Support Worker to join our team. As a Peer Support Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with mental health and substance use challenges. You will work collaboratively with clients, healthcare teams, and community resources to provide emotional support, life skills assistance, and information to help individuals achieve their recovery goals.
Key Responsibilities
Provide peer support and guidance to clients with mental health and substance use challenges
Collaborate with healthcare teams and community resources to develop and implement individualized recovery plans
Offer emotional support, life skills assistance, and information to help clients achieve their recovery goals
Work collaboratively with clients to identify and address their unique needs and challenges
Provide education and support to clients on healthy coping mechanisms, stress management, and relapse prevention
Requirements
Lived experience with recovery from a mental illness and/or substance use as a recipient of mental health and substance use services
Successful completion of a recognized Peer Support Training program and two (2) years recent related experience in a peer support role or an equivalent combination of education, training, peer support and employment experience
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Ability to develop and maintain positive and respectful relationships with co-workers and the multidisciplinary team
Ability to deal with others effectively
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
Ability to organize work
Ability to operate related equipment
Knowledge of diverse Indigenous communities' social, historical, jurisdictional, and cultural context, and Indigenous views on approaches to health and wellness
Knowledge of, and ability to apply, an understanding of First Nations cultural principles and protocols and ability to manage conflict in a respectful and culturally relevant and safe manner
