As a key member of the City of Calgary team, you will play a vital role in supporting the management and coordination of corporate governance. Your responsibilities will include developing service policy, leading policy review programs, directing policy reviews, establishing governance frameworks, and developing approaches to improve governance practices within the organization.

Key duties will include:

  • Managing the policy review program to cyclically review policies, providing training and communications about the program, and ensuring policies are synergistic, aligned with organizational strategic objectives, and free from policy barriers for Calgarians and businesses.
  • Reviewing and editing new and amended policies, working with service teams to assess policy needs, help clarify policy objectives, craft policy statements, and create implementation plans.
  • Contributing to achieving the objectives of the service governance and policy review program.
  • Coordinating the development of four-year service plans and budgets for the department, managing associated accountability reporting, and enterprise risk management reporting.
  • Providing updates and recommendations to the General Manager on business planning, budgeting, risk, and corporate reporting for all business units in the department.
  • Participating in projects led by the Service excellence group, which may include leading departmental teams and managing projects to deliver on business improvement initiatives or accomplish organizational and Council strategic direction.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • A degree in Business, Management, Commerce, Political Sciences, Public Administration, Public Policy, or a related area.
  • At least 5 years of experience in strategy, policy and program development, governance, compliance management, risk management, or performance measurement.
  • An understanding of municipal governance structure and operations.
  • Experience writing policies or reports will be considered an asset.
  • Experience with project management facilitation or client negotiation will be considered an asset.
  • Intermediate level proficiency in MS Word, Excel, or a working knowledge of Content Server will be considered an asset.

This role requires well-developed research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, as well as strong communication skills. Facilitation skills and political acumen are also essential, with the ability to influence others and build consensus.
