Job Summary:

The City of Ottawa's Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services department is seeking a skilled Therapeutic Recreation Specialist to assist with the delivery of a Therapeutic Recreation / Life Skills Day Program. This program aims to provide community recreation programs and services that are customer-centric and efficient, catering to the needs of individuals with disabilities and population segments who may experience barriers to access recreation services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Therapeutic Recreation / Life Skills Day Program services.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners, stakeholders, and clients to ensure program effectiveness and customer satisfaction.
  • Provide support and guidance to clients with disabilities, promoting independence and inclusion in recreational activities.
  • Collaborate with program staff to ensure seamless delivery of services and programs.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of program policies, procedures, and best practices.

Requirements:

  • Completion of a college diploma in a related field, such as recreation, therapy, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience working with adults with disabilities, preferably in a therapeutic recreation or life skills setting.
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED certificates.
  • Crisis Prevention/Intervention training certificate.
  • AODA Customer Service/IASR Training.
  • Ergonomic Lifts and Transfers training.

Competencies and Skills:

  • Ability to lead small groups and facilitate inclusive recreational activities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation and policies.

Language Requirements:

The successful candidate will be required to communicate effectively in English, with some positions requiring bilingual competencies. Please note that language requirements may vary depending on the location of the position.

Police Record Check:

The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa's satisfaction.
