Job Summary

The Salvation Army is seeking an experienced and compassionate Assistant Director to oversee the day-to-day operations of our shelter programs. As a key member of our team, you will provide leadership and support to our staff, build relationships with residents, and contribute to the overall success of our organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervision and Leadership
    • Supervise and provide direction to Hostel/Residential Supervisors in accordance with established policies
    • Conduct regular supervision sessions, document progress, and provide feedback
    • Chair and minute regular team meetings to ensure effective communication and collaboration
  • Shelter Operations
    • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Hostel, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for residents
    • Provide direct consultation, referral, and case management services to clients
    • Review incident reports, follow up as needed, and maintain accurate records
    • Liaise with hospitals and community agencies to coordinate discharges and services
  • Community Engagement
    • Participate in the development and planning of programming activities and special events
    • Assist the Director with community outreach and engagement initiatives
    • Provide backup support and make decisions in the absence of the Director
  • Human Resources
    • Assist with staff recruitment, selection, and onboarding processes
    • Recommend disciplinary actions and participate in Labour Management meetings
    • Manage time off, lieu time, and schedule requests
  • Financial and Materials Management
    • Approve payroll for Hostel/Residential Supervisors, Intake Workers, and Dining Room Attendants
    • Assist with budget preparation and financial monitoring
  • Working Conditions
    • Work in a fast-paced emergency housing facility with high client levels of stress and crisis intervention required
    • Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, and other challenging conditions
    Qualifications and Education
    • Minimum 2-year Diploma in Human Services or equivalent
    • Certificate in First Aid/CPR, Crisis Intervention, and CPI
    • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
    Experience and Knowledge
    • Minimum five years of significant work-related experience, including supervision, coaching, and mentoring
    • Experience working with marginalized homeless populations, mental health issues, and addictions
    Skills and Capabilities
    • High level of comfort working in a diverse and multicultural environment
    • Superior written skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office 365
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work in a team environment
