About the Role:

We are seeking a dedicated and culturally aware Outreach Worker Team Member to join our CAIS team at the Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness Society. As an integral part of our team, you will provide one-on-one support to Indigenous individuals transitioning into independent housing, ensuring their emotional and cultural needs are met.

Key Responsibilities:

  • ">
  • Provide personalized emotional and cultural support to Family Members accessing our Broughton Street location.">
  • Collaborate with the team to offer move-in support to Family Members transitioning into private and subsidized housing, including requested cultural preparations like smudging, brushing off, and prayers.">
  • Sustain relationships with Family Members living independently, helping them maintain tenancy by connecting them to community resources and regularly developing life skills and personal goals.">
  • Educate Family Members on local protocols and practicing Aboriginal rights, such as wood harvesting.">
  • Organize and lead food preparation and preservation workshops.">
  • Coordinate land-based learning activities, including cedar harvesting, weaving, regalia-making, and other traditional crafts.">
  • Facilitate workshops on boundaries and relationships for Family Members.">
  • Lead outings to cultural sites, teaching self-determination in practice and sharing knowledge about regulations.">
  • Maintain availability to support daily cultural arts activities at the office.">
  • Share cultural knowledge and skills with Family members and peers.">
  • Support the CAIS program by attending intake meetings, preparing welcome home kits, leading cultural activities, organizing monthly cooking workshops, holding healing circles, and teaching traditional crafts.">
  • Document support provided using a tracking form, demonstrating the importance of cultural support for Indigenous peoples experiencing homelessness and substance use.">
  • Participate in CAIS program development sessions, contributing to the model's 7 support areas: housing, personal care and living, Indigenous culture, social, emotional, community; restorative justice; food security, and wellness/healing from substance use.">
  • Attend land-based healing events to support ongoing activities, meals, and ceremonies.">
  • Support monthly Building Community events led by the Outreach team.">

Requirements:

  • Must consent to and satisfy the requirements through the Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check for Working with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults.">
  • Hold current First Aid and CPR certification.">
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License required, along with a reliable vehicle.">
  • Progressive understanding of persistent mental illness, addictions, and other challenges impacting people's overall health, well-being, and quality of life.">
  • Ability to work holistically, professionally, and non-judgmentally with diverse personalities, needs, cultures, lived experiences, and abilities.">
  • Effective communication skills in a cross-cultural environment.">
  • Interpersonal and relationship-building skills.">
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.">
  • Self-starter with demonstrated organizational skills.">
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects and deadlines under pressure.">
  • Demonstrated teamwork, leadership, and supervisory skills.">
  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma due to colonization, Residential Schools, Sixties Scoop, and oppressive systems, as well as the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada.">
