As a key member of the Nova Scotia Health Authority, the Zone Medical Department Head - Hospitalist Zone plays a crucial role in providing strategic and operational planning and service leadership for the Hospitalist Zone department. Reporting to the Zone Medical Executive Director, this leader will work within a co-leadership model with an Administrative Co-Lead to ensure the department's success.
Responsibilities- Hold responsibility for the administrative functioning of the department, including regular department meetings and providing meeting minutes to the Zone Medical Executive Director.
- Work with Hospitalist Site Leads, Medical Site Leads, and operational leadership to ensure service continuity and key patient flow objectives are met.
- Sit as an active member of the Zone Medical Advisory Committee, advising on quality of care, teaching and research responsibilities, and department objectives.
- Hold responsibility for organization and implementation of clinical and academic activities, ensuring alignment with NSHA organization and system priorities.
- Develop and implement a plan to improve access and flow for the zone, including community hospitals and cross-facility transfers.
- Attend meetings of the Access and Flow Network Council and contribute to the development of strategies, policies, and procedures to promote increased access and flow of patients.
- Ensure the maintenance and enforcement of professional standards within the department and implement quality assurance and improvement initiatives.
- Address and resolve medical staff issues, including respectful workplace and interpersonal matters, and oversee complaint and discipline management.
- Attend relevant committee meetings as assigned by the Medical Executive Director.
- Provide co-leadership with the Zone Administrative Director for strategic and operational planning and budgeting.
- Monitor the performance and effectiveness of medical staff members and act on issues identified.
- Review the performance of department members annually and provide performance management as required.
- Coordinate medical students and residents in the Zone, including supervision of residents' education requirements.
- Support the research agenda within the department.
- Participate in clinical services planning for the Zone/NSHA.
- Work collaboratively with the ZMED and Medical Site Leads to lead recruitment and retention for the department.
- Participate in leadership development.
