Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our team in Women's and Infants' Health: Labour and Delivery. The successful candidate will provide consultation and care plans for complex obstetrical patients, and guidance and leadership to nursing staff managing complex obstetrical patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive client and family directed care in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team
  • Integrate extensive clinical experience with theory, research and in-depth nursing and related knowledge to develop complex nursing care plans
  • Guide decision making in complex clinical situations and disseminate knowledge using appropriate delivery methods
  • Recognize the need for plan outcome measurements, including the Labour and Delivery balanced score card (e.g., client feedback, conducting surveys, intervention rates, staff adherence to best practice etc.)
  • Minimize variances in care, and prevent adverse outcomes
System Improvement
  • Contribute to the effective functioning of Labour and Delivery by generating and incorporating new nursing knowledge to develop standards of care, practice guidelines, care pathways/protocols, programs and policies
  • Participate in strategic planning, identify and lead quality and risk reviews and initiatives, and understand and integrate the principles of resource allocation and cost effectiveness in decision making
  • Participate in recruitment and retention activities, implement improvements in structures and processes, and identify, advocate, lead and manage change
Education
  • Commit to professional growth and learning for all healthcare providers, students and patients by planning, coordinating and conducting patient and healthcare team educational programs based on needs, priorities and organizational resources
  • Disseminate new knowledge through formal and informal channels, including internal and external presentations and publications
  • Identify the learning needs of nurses and other members of the healthcare team and find or develop programs and resources to meet those needs
Research
  • Generate, synthesize, critique and apply research evidence by identifying and implementing research-based innovations for improving care
  • Apply research, practice guidelines and current best practices, identify, conduct and support research, collect data and evaluate outcomes of care
  • Facilitate evidence-informed practice
Leadership
  • Participate in professional development, apply theories and principles of safety, project and change management, and develop and articulate a vision for nursing practice and implement approaches to realize the vision
Requirements
  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Master's degree in Nursing
  • Recent experience as a Labour and Delivery nurse in a tertiary center (required)
  • Recent experience as an advanced practice nurse in Labour and Delivery (preferred)
  • Certification in Fetal Health Surveillance and NRP, instructor status preferred, or willingness to complete within 6 months of hire
  • Certification in Perinatal Nursing preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and sustain change, demonstrated experience with knowledge transfer, and utilizes and demonstrates a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in the care of obstetrical and laboring patients and families
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and customer service skills, excellent organization and time management skills, excellent decision-making, problem recognition, problem-solving skills, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, program planning and evaluation methodology skills, commitment to collaborative practice, ability to work effectively and independently under stressful/challenging conditions, ability to utilize information technology and support staff in its application, especially Cerner and Fetal Link Systems, expertise in Power Point, Visio or other equivalent platforms

The estimated salary for this role is between $120,000 and $150,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
