Job Summary

The Financial Reporting Officer plays a critical role in preparing the university's financial statements and related reports. This position requires leadership and expertise in financial stewardship, including financial analysis, planning, and budgeting. The incumbent will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including senior management and the Board of Trustees.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare financial statements and reports for the university and its related entities.
  • Provide support in preparing financial reports and statutory filings, including tax returns.
  • Develop and maintain financial planning and budgeting materials, including staffing plans.
  • Conduct financial analysis and provide recommendations to senior management and the Board of Trustees.
  • Perform financial and accounting duties, including processing transactions and overseeing account management.
  • Identify and address financial issues and errors, and implement process improvements.

Requirements:

  • University degree in Commerce or Business Administration, plus a professional accounting designation (CPA).
  • Several years of experience in accounting and financial analysis, preferably in a university or large institution environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting standards and regulations, including those applicable to not-for-profit organizations.

Special Skills:

  • Advanced auditing and analysis skills to prepare detailed financial reports and accurate statements.
  • Strong analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills to provide financial management and recommendations.
  • Ability to work with complex accounting procedures and systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with individuals at all levels, internal and external to the university.

Decision Making:

  • Make independent decisions regarding financial matters, including accounting errors and process improvements.
  • Exercise discretion when handling confidential information, including workforce planning and budget decisions.
  • Develop and implement solutions to financial issues and errors, and provide recommendations to senior management and the Board of Trustees.
