About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Low Vision Specialist to join our team at Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada. As a key member of our rehabilitation services, you will play a vital role in empowering individuals who are blind or partially sighted to regain their independence and achieve their full potential.

In this rewarding position, you will be responsible for conducting functional low vision assessments, teaching individuals how to maximize residual vision, and recommending and training in the use of optical and non-optical aids. You will also educate individuals about their eye condition and vision health, refer them to other internal and external services as needed, and handle public inquiries regarding vision health and low vision services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct functional low vision assessments to identify the individual's visual needs and develop an appropriate rehabilitation plan.
  • Teach individuals with partial sight how to maximize residual vision and adapt to their visual impairment.
  • Recommend and train in the use of optical and non-optical aids, such as magnifiers and reading machines, to enhance the individual's vision and independence.
  • Educate individuals about their eye condition and vision health, including the importance of regular eye exams and proper eye care.
  • Refer individuals to other internal and external services as needed, such as optometrists or ophthalmologists, to ensure they receive comprehensive care.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • A post-secondary degree in a related field, such as health care or vision science, and certification as a Low Vision Therapist.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to collaboration and continuous learning.
