Job Description

As a Surgical Services Nurse Specialist, you will be responsible for assessing patients, collecting information from various sources, and making nursing diagnoses. You will also collaborate with patients and their families/caregivers in developing care plans, encourage family participation in the development, implementation, and ongoing modification of care plans, and establish a therapeutic relationship by demonstrating empathy, trust, and respect.

Responsibilities
  • Assess patients and collect information from various sources using skills of observation, communication, data review, and physical assessment.
  • Makes a nursing diagnosis of the patient's condition and determines whether the condition can be improved or resolved by an appropriate nursing intervention.
  • Plans, performs, and evaluates nursing interventions and care.
  • Collaborates with patients and their families/caregivers in developing the care plan.
  • Establishes a therapeutic relationship by demonstrating empathy, trust, and respect.
  • Participates in the care and discharge planning process for patients on admission.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment and provide nursing care through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety-type interventions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families/caregivers, the public, medical staff, and members of the interprofessional care team.
  • Ability to promote person-centered care that demonstrates empathy for patients and families/caregivers, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, and patient advocacy.
