About the Role
This position is responsible for operating electric, diesel-electric, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives; pumping liquid chemicals, liquid petroleum products, and other liquids from tank cars; interpreting train orders, signals, and rules and regulations; transporting freight; and timely and correct switching and placement of rail cars.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect locomotive before operating to verify specified fuel, sand, water, and other supplies.
- Receive starting signal from crew leader or helper and move controls, such as throttle and airbrakes, to move locomotive.
- Interpret train orders, train signals, and rules and regulations to operate locomotive, following safety regulations, operating procedures, and switching schedule.
- Assist crew leader in training new employees.
- Observe track to detect obstructions.
- Prepare reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.
- Lubricate moving parts of locomotive.
- Handle train equipment in a safe manner using independent or automatic brakes.
- Wear required personal protective equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma (or equivalent) preferred but not required.
- Military experience helpful.
- Dependable and punctual in attendance; reliable transportation to work every day.
- Good communication skills; comfortable engaging in various communicative modes and strong active listening skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and develop a plan to complete them in a timely manner.
- Ability to work well with others as part of a team in a cooperative manner.
- Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to follow directions from crew leaders, assistant site leader, site leaders, regional leaders, and any other member of the Railserve management team.
Work Environment
This incumbent regularly works in an outdoor environment, in various weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
