About the Role

We are seeking a Human Rights and Equity Officer to join our team at the University of New Brunswick. This role is responsible for resolving or referring complaints, aiding in the development and research of EDI initiatives and tools, and providing research and analysis for HRE and UNB.

Responsibilities
  • Address matters impacting the UNB community's human rights with the ability to work with all equity groups, incorporating a strong intersectional and anti-racist lens.
  • Support the complaints process at UNB with strong ethical values.
  • Determine if client concerns fall within the scope of HREO - listen to concerns, ask questions, gather appropriate information, and complete appropriate documentation.
  • Provide advice and guidance on information resolution options to clients.
  • Utilize various approaches that include but are not limited to anti-racism, anti-oppressive and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Consult other relevant UNB parties in the implementation of informal resolution strategies.
  • Assist clients with written or verbal communications and support them through the complaint process.
  • Provide advice/guidance on the formal complaint process as per UNB policies/the New Brunswick Human Rights Act.
  • Create and deliver educational materials on the informal and formal resolution processes.
  • Manage the formal complaint process as per UNB policies and best practices.
  • Manage the case file life cycles (open, add, close, destroy) and maintain confidential electronic records.
  • Maintain data and report on intake and resolution activities. Prepare summaries of case files.
  • Identify opportunities and gaps to ensure compliance with legislation.
  • Respond to general inquiries, provide reasonable answers, or facilitate means to find a solution to inquiries.
  • Research and assist in the development of multiple EDI resources to be distributed for use as needed.
  • Improve EDI knowledge at UNB through the creation of resources and presentations.
  • Prepare reports to meet both internal and external requirements.
  • Research best practices in equity, diversity, inclusion, and human rights.
  • Research and summarize institutional policies/case law related to human rights and equity.
  • Assist with the development or continuous improvement of presentations and training materials.
  • Design surveys and various instruments in conducting assessments of UNB community needs.
  • Build healthy and professional relationships with all HREO team members, fostering team cohesion and productivity.
  • Work towards building community at UNB in collaborative programming with the Advocacy and Education Office.
  • Serve as a member of various committees such as Survey Governance, and policy review committees.
  • Communicate and build relationships with various external stakeholders to support human rights/EDI best practices within UNB.
  • Advocate Human Rights and Equity through relationship building, community development and education at UNB.
What We Offer

The successful candidate will have access to a comprehensive benefits package, including a minimum of three weeks of vacation annually, the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), and dental, life, and health insurance. The salary range for this position is $69,660 - $94,939 per annum.

Requirements
  • A university degree in a related field (e.g., Human Rights, Social Justice, Social Work, Administration, Law, etc.).
  • A specialized master's degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Sound knowledge of current community issues in New Brunswick (i.e. housing, newcomer challenges, healthcare etc.).
  • 3-5 years of experience managing conflict/responding to/resolving complaints of harassment and discrimination.
  • Strong equity lens with an understanding of the lived experience of equity-deserving/denied persons and communities.
  • Core equity competencies and experience working towards anti-racism and equity education.
