Job Description

The University of British Columbia is seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual to fill the position of Head of Department of Surgery. This is a key leadership role that requires a strong vision for the department's future and the ability to inspire and motivate a team of surgeons, scientists, and educators.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Department of Surgery, aligning with the University's mission and goals.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive plan to advance the department's research, education, and clinical programs.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
  • Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration within the department.
  • Oversee the department's budget and resources, ensuring effective use and allocation.
  • Make key decisions regarding faculty appointments, promotions, and tenure.
  • Represent the department at university and external events, promoting its research, education, and clinical programs.
Requirements
  • PhD or MD in a relevant field, with a strong background in surgery and academic leadership.
  • Proven track record of success in academic and administrative leadership roles, with a focus on research, education, and clinical programs.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make informed decisions and drive change.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a similar leadership role, with a strong understanding of the academic and clinical environments.
  • Strong network of contacts and relationships within the academic and clinical communities.
  • Ability to secure external funding and partnerships to support the department's research and education programs.
