Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Labour Relations Strategic Advisor to join our team at Ontario Power Generation. As a key member of our Labour Relations department, you will play a critical role in managing labour relations activities, resolving labour disputes, and providing strategic advice and guidance on the interpretation of collective agreements, procedures, and policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight to all grievance activities and represent OPG in various processes as necessary.
  • Lead diverse negotiations, including contract renewals, midterm discussions, and drafting letters of expectations, as well as communicate and implement changes to the Collective Agreement.
  • Provide support, assistance, and advice to the Director and Vice-President of Labour Relations and other senior human resource professionals concerning Labour Relations matters.
  • Develop and maintain harmonious, effective working relationships with employee representatives, ensuring timely consultation and joint processes wherever possible.
  • Identify the need for Labour Relations training and ensure it is developed and delivered to meet client needs and expectations.
  • Interface with external contacts and agents to identify/resolve issues.
  • Lead and participate in committees, working groups, and strategic reviews for the purpose of exploring HR strategic issues and providing conclusions and recommendations.
  • Manage and mentor staff responsible for providing Labour Relations services.
  • Manage department budget to ensure financial results are realized.
  • Prepare briefing notes, board memoranda, and other submissions for senior management. Review submitted documents to ensure business implications are reflected appropriately.
  • Provide advice and support to senior management with respect to strategic Labour Relations issues impacting business success, collective bargaining, and relations with the unions, contractors, and other external groups.
Requirements
  • 4-Year University Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Master's of Industrial Relations (MIR), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), and/or Master's of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus in Labour Relations is an asset.
  • Certification in labour relations or Human Resources (CHRP, CHRL) is an asset.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of strategic labour relations experience in a unionized environment. Must be able to provide strategic labour relations advice and counsel.
  • Sound knowledge of labour relations principles, processes, best practices, theories, trends, and related legislation and arbitral jurisprudence in both public and private sectors.
  • Extensive experience with grievance administration and collective agreement interpretation.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others and use superior judgement, business awareness, and political acuity to provide risk-based advice.
  • Strong knowledge of employment and other provincial and federal legislative requirements.
  • Ability to quickly understand business processes and navigate organization and support systems to deliver results.
