The University of Alberta, a leading institution in research and academic excellence, is seeking an exceptional individual to fill the role of Director for the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI). Our Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is dedicated to advancing the field of neuroscience and mental health through cutting-edge research and innovative collaborations.

With a strong commitment to translating discoveries into improved prevention and treatment options, we aim to address the complex challenges associated with neurological and mental health-related diseases and disorders. The NMHI brings together over 170 investigators from diverse backgrounds, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes impactful discovery and clinical, community, and population sciences research.

Job Description

This senior leadership position requires a highly accomplished individual with an internationally recognized record of accomplishment in neuroscience or mental health. The successful candidate will possess a proven track record of building and managing high-quality relationships across diverse groups, with a focus on promoting interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mobilizing Investigators: Identify emerging research themes and priorities, and help mobilize investigators to develop large-scale NMHI projects, including research infrastructure and core facilities, to secure major grants.
  • Cultivating Interdisciplinary Research: Champion a culture of collaborative research to identify and advance neuroscience and mental health research priorities provincially, nationally, and internationally.
  • Strengthening Partnerships: Collaborate with local and provincial partners, including healthcare services, research institutions, and patient advocacy groups, to foster mutually beneficial relationships.
  • National and International Connections: Establish connections with national and international research organizations to ensure the NMHI's activities align with leading trends in neuroscience and mental health research.
  • Career Development: Develop and coordinate career, educational, and training opportunities for NMHI trainees.
  • Funding and Sustainability: Lead the development and implementation of funding support collaboratively with Development, ensuring financial self-sustainability.
  • Public Advocacy: Advocate for NMHI and neuroscience and mental health research to the public.
Requirements
  • A University of Alberta faculty appointment at the associate or full professor level.
  • An internationally recognized record of accomplishment in neuroscience or mental health.
  • A demonstrated ability to build, manage, and maintain high-quality relationships across diverse groups.
  • A commitment to service and leadership, with a vision for promoting interdisciplinary research and collaboration.
Estimated Salary Range

$180,000 - $220,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.
