Mechanical Systems Design Engineer

About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and technically competent Mechanical Engineer to join our team at EXP. As one of Atlantic Canada's largest and most reputable engineering and architecture firms, we offer a full suite of multidisciplinary consulting services to our clients.
Your Work Environment
In this role, you'll be working in our Halifax office, taking advantage of our flexible hybrid work model. Our office space has been designed to provide a bright, vibrant, highly functional, technologically advanced, and collaborative working environment for our team.
You will have the ability to collaborate seamlessly with our multidisciplinary team from within the region and across the company on some of Atlantic Canada's largest and most exciting projects. If desired, you will also be given the opportunity to contribute to unique and challenging projects outside of Atlantic Canada.
What a Day at EXP Has in Store for You
- Prepare drawings, specifications, and reports necessary to deliver a project.
- Develop layouts and design of mechanical building systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, fire protection systems, plumbing, and drainage systems, control systems, and specialized systems.
- Create project-specific details to clarify project scope and create building sections to assist with interference coordination between building systems.
- Prepare calculations to size ductwork, gas, HVAC, piping, plumbing, and drainage. Incorporate calculations into technical drawings.
- Prepare calculations to size equipment and prepare equipment schedules that are project-specific. Coordinate with necessary project team members to review equipment and ensure a complete and correct design is achieved.
- Respond to both internal and external communication regarding project or design status; report to the Buildings and Industrial Engineering manager and/or project manager regarding the design status.
- Create design drawings in AutoCAD and REVIT.
- Undertake field investigations, including building condition assessments, field measurements, construction inspection.
- Conduct technical code and standard reviews and technical calculations to support building systems designs and reports.
- Communicate with clients, project stakeholders, and multi-disciplinary team members.
- Support clients during tendering and construction, including site inspections and monitoring of contractor progress.
About Your Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with 4+ years of relevant buildings and industrial experience.
- Professional Engineer (licensed with Engineers Nova Scotia (ENS), or eligible for immediate registration).
- Background in preparation of construction documents, including specifications and cost estimates.
- A solid understanding of mechanical systems design, construction, project, and budget management, and proposal preparation.
- Knowledge of the national building codes, ASHRAE, CSA, and NFPA standards.
- REVIT/BIM proficiency is considered a strong asset.
- Able to work in a deadline-driven environment, dealing with multiple projects and clients.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, products).
- Experience with Energy modelling and energy auditing for energy efficiency, Renewable energy, power generation, LEED, Green Globes, Zero Carbon Building Standard are considered an asset.
