About the Position

This role reports to the health and safety supervisor and is responsible for implementing health and safety programs for Canadian terminals and the Pipeline Saint-Laurent. The successful candidate will identify improvement opportunities and corrective measures, particularly through audit and inspection programs. They will also ensure that all construction or maintenance projects undertaken are in full compliance with acts and regulations and with OHS best practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the OHS audit and inspection program.
  • Act as the in-house consultant on health and safety procedures, policies, and regulations.
  • Participate in the development of construction projects as the OHS adviser.
  • Take part in the development, implementation, and enforcement of OHS policies and procedures.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the corporate health and safety group to harmonize ways of doing things.
  • Offer support to personnel in Canadian terminals in the area of health and safety.
  • Promote and coordinate prevention activities, such as the prevention week, workshops, clinics, etc.
  • Verify compliance and certification of OHS equipment, keep a log, and ensure verification and maintenance.
  • Keep Valero's prevention plan up to date and check over the contractors' plans.
  • Take part in investigations and/or see to it that they are conducted effectively when incidents or accidents occur.
  • Participate in regulatory oversight and develop a log of OHS legislation and regulations for each site.
  • Hold safety breaks or meetings.
  • Manage the security guard team.
  • Act as the port safety spokesperson.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or a college diploma (DEC) in a relevant field with a minimum of 5 years' experience in an industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards and regulations.
  • Familiarity with personal protective equipment or knowledge of or interest in emergency and firefighting equipment.
  • Interest in emergency responses (fire, rescue).
  • Bilingualism both orally and in writing.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Sound judgment and ability to make quick decisions.

Candidates must be available for occasional travel to various Valero facilities across Canada.

Valero Energy Inc. is governed by the Charter of the French Language. However, knowledge of English is considered necessary for performing the tasks of this position. The individual in this position will be required to review documents and interact both verbally and in writing with colleagues at the head office in Texas or in other Canadian provinces, or with various stakeholders such as customers, suppliers, unilingual anglophone business partners.
