Legislative Affairs Specialist

About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Director of Legislative Affairs & Implementation to join our team at the Office of the Mayor, City of Toronto.
This key leadership position requires someone with experience in managing teams, building strong relationships with Councillors and City Staff, and effectively navigating the Committee and Council cycle at City Hall.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and empowering a high-performing team by setting clear expectations, fostering accountability, and ensuring optimal efficiency and results-driven outcomes.
- Serve as Senior Advisor to the Mayor: Provide strategic advice on legislative affairs and policy implementation to the Mayor.
- Lead and Empower Team Members: Set clear expectations, delegate tasks effectively, and foster a culture of accountability within the team.
- Foster Strong Relationships: Develop and maintain positive working relationships with Members of Council and City Staff.
- Manage Committee Cycle: Monitor agendas, track issues arising, synthesize reports, collaborate with Councillors and City Staff, and draft amendments as required.
- Liaise with City Staff: Support the implementation of the Mayor's and Council's policy directives.
- Coordinate Across Teams: Ensure all teams are apprised of issues coming to Committee and Council.
- Ensure Smooth Communication: Facilitate up-to-date communication of Council and legislative priorities within the Mayor's office team and among Members of Council and their staff.
- Identify Emerging Opportunities: Work proactively with the Communications and Community Engagement teams to address emerging opportunities and issues moving through the legislative agenda.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Strong Leadership Skills: Proven ability to manage teams, assign responsibilities, and ensure accountability to achieve organizational goals.
- Persuasive and Adaptable: Comfortable navigating complex dynamics, finding common ground, and working in a fast-paced environment with many competing priorities.
- People-Focused: Ability to understand complex policy programs, synthesize information quickly, and arrive at solutions that advance the Mayor's agenda.
- Politically Astute: Familiarity with municipal policy files, legislative processes, political policy-making, and decision-making at City Hall.
- Municipal Experience: Preferably, experience working in the municipal political space.
