About the Role

The Therapeutic Recreation Manager (TRM) is a key member of our team at Retirement Concepts, responsible for leading the Recreation Department and ensuring the emotional, cognitive, physical, social, and spiritual needs of our residents are met.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the Recreation staff and volunteers to deliver high-quality programs and services.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate Recreation services to support the well-being of our residents.
  • Collaborate with the General Manager and other departments to achieve the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Recruit, orient, and manage the performance of Recreation staff, including the Volunteer Program.
  • Participate in grievance handling and provide ongoing probationary and performance evaluations.
  • Identify education needs for employees and manage work schedules, coordinates work assignments, and maintains direct care hours.
  • Coordinate student placement programs and complete documentation as required.
  • Attend leadership team meetings and participate in the strategic plan for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of the budget, both operating and capital.
  • Act as the community liaison for the Resident Council and coordinate support as necessary.
  • Liaise with community agencies, groups, and individuals to augment programs and promote the community.
  • Oversee and update standards, procedures, and records to maintain an organized and efficient department.
  • Maintain a safe environment for residents, family, and staff through accident prevention, knowledge of emergency procedures, and infection control.
  • Develop and distribute monthly recreation program calendars and newsletters.
  • Complete and submit Departmental month-end reports.
  • Maintain the community bus safety program, including scheduling bus maintenance, inspections, licensing requirements of drivers, and safety procedures.
  • Attend in-service and education sessions to continually upgrade professional skills.
  • Complete resident assessments and maintain care plans in accordance with provincial and governing regulations.
  • Facilitate programs and interventions for residents.
  • Provide mentorship and education to staff on clinical best practice in the field of Therapeutic Recreation.
  • Report and document relevant observations concerning resident behavior and communicate these observations to other members of the care team.
  • Participate in community and corporate Continuous Quality Improvement Committees and initiatives as required.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Graduation from a recognized Therapeutic Recreation Program, Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Certification from the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association (CTRA) as required.
  • A minimum of two years' management experience in a seniors housing setting preferred.
  • Current Basic CPR/First Aid qualifications.
  • Current class 4 BC Driver's License as required.
  • Current Food Safe Certification required.
  • Current Serving It Right Certification required.
  • All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.
  • Ability to understand the needs of seniors.
  • Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently.
  • Solid working knowledge of related office equipment and Windows-based software, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Previous financial management experience.
