We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Research Assistant/Technician to join our team at the Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest.
Job Summary:The successful candidate will be responsible for performing various laboratory tasks, including biological specimen collection, processing, and shipping, as well as operating laboratory equipment and maintaining inventory of workstations and reagents.
Key Responsibilities:- Apply established standards when performing venipuncture and catheter insertions
- Operate laboratory equipment, including training provided
- Collect, process, and ship biological specimens to local and central laboratories
- Perform assessments, including collection of body metrics, vital signs, and EKG
- Source data collection and data entry
- Collaborate with research staff to determine lab setup requirements
- Maintain inventory of workstations, reagents, and medical supplies within the lab
- Prepare, assemble, and set up material, equipment, and supplies used in research labs
- Troubleshoot issues with lab equipment and/or workstations
- Document and maintain standard operating procedures
- Provide orientation and training to others on lab equipment, working procedures, and practices
- College Certificate or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
- Minimum one year of experience and demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy
- Minimum one year of experience and demonstrated proficiency in catheter insertions
- One year or more of experience working in a lab environment, analyzing and shipping of biological samples, and performing other medical procedures
- Ability to prioritize and keep multiple projects/tasks moving forward at once
- Demonstrates ability to develop skill and knowledge in duties where experience is lacking
- Initiative to be a self-starter and to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Time management and organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines, attention to detail
- Problem solving, with diplomacy and tact, interpersonal expertise, and role modeling
- Partnership building – ability to gain confidence and cooperation of students, employers, and faculty members
- Advanced computer skills including: word processing, email, internet, database management
- Knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System regulations (WHMIS) and/or willingness to complete this training
