About the Role

Bird Construction is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Director of Operations to lead our operations team and drive the success of our construction projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership
    • Develop and implement a corporate culture that aligns with Bird Construction's core values and promotes a high-performance work environment.
    • Recruit, hire, and onboard new talent, and provide ongoing coaching and mentoring to ensure employee growth and development.
    • Drive employee engagement and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and foster a positive and inclusive work environment.
    • Interface with the regional Vice President to ensure adequate and timely workforce planning, and drive a high-performance culture.
    • Actively engage in talent review and succession planning processes, and promote a 'One Bird' mindset among staff.
  • Operations Management
    • Provide input and guidance to proposal and project teams to achieve the goals of the regional business plan, and work in accordance with the Bird Construction Operations Manual to continuously improve project delivery services.
    • Manage construction projects and project teams to meet approved project targets related to safety, profitability, schedule, quality, sustainability, and turnover.
    • Support the Estimating and Pre-construction Departments in the go/no-go process, and develop project KPIs as required.
    • Review the Road Map to Fee (RMTF) document and finalize with consultation with District leadership, and support the Estimating and Pre-Construction departments in pricing and planning.
    • Manage creation and execution of a commercial risk management process and strategy, and oversee the creation and execution of all prime and sub-trade contracts.
    • Manage mobilization and site readiness, and provide leadership to field construction as required.
    • Manage the creation and execution of an effective quality assurance/quality control program, and conduct monthly project meetings to review project reporting and alignment with the regional business plan.
    • Conduct regular visits to project sites to verify project status, and monitor, assess, and make adjustments for improving self-performed work.
    • Manage the Profit & Loss Reporting (P&L) process, and take on the responsibility of the Project Sponsor as required.
    • Develop and maintain a relationship with clients, and be aware of all legal, insurance, lien, and claim issues that manifest in the District.
    • Work with the regional Safety Manager to maintain HSE and OH&S standards for the district, and provide a monthly report to the regional Vice President.
  • Resource Management
    • Responsible for staffing and resource management of all projects, and responsible for equipment and purchasing, and yard management.
  • Strategic Planning
    • Support the development of the District business plan, and work with the regional management team to support the development of new market initiatives and business opportunities.
  • Business Development
    • Assist the regional Vice President and Director of Business Development in establishing and maintaining strategic relations with customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders, including governments and the public.
Requirements
  • Post-secondary education such as a degree or diploma in a related field and/or relevant combination of experience.
  • 20 years' experience in commercial and/or institutional construction.
  • 10 years' experience in a leadership role.
  • Track record of successful project management of major building construction projects in excess of $50 million.
  • Deep expertise and proven track record with respect to the continuous improvement project delivery services and value-added constructability process and practice.
  • Ability to lead and operate within an environment where change happens frequently.
  • Commitment to hiring, mentoring, training, and retaining a focused team, and the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
  • Strong leadership capability as evidenced by demonstrable success in team/collaborative work environments.
  • Ability to forge, grow, and maintain positive relationships with multiple groups.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities, and capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment.
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritization of work to achieve them.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem-solving skills, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Sense of urgency and strong commitment to achieving goals, and ability to work in a challenging, fast-paced environment.
