Job Summary

HDR is seeking an Industrial Design Manager - Transit Facilities to direct the design of transit facility-focused projects. The primary responsibilities include project design oversight of all industrial/transit facilities, including vehicle and transit maintenance facilities for heavy rail, subway, LRT, and Bus-based systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead all conceptual and detail design aspects of vehicle and transit maintenance facilities for small to medium and large projects.
  • Provide guidance and specialty facility design services to multi-disciplines design teams.
  • Independently coordinate the work of professional staff and balance the team throughout the entire project's development.
  • Participate in leading concept/design meetings with various clients and architects.
  • Conduct work sessions for design development.
  • Coordinate workload through the entire project development for completing documents on schedule.
  • Track the financial aspects of projects and coordinate and adjust the work effort with the team to ensure that the work is completed within the budget.
  • Serve as the design manager of the production team when requested by the overall Project Manager.
  • Facility programming, report writing, site master planning, developing specifications, and construction documents.
  • Selection, coordination, and layout of various aspects of facilities design (vehicle maintenance equipment, site flow, etc.).
  • Submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs review.
  • Conduct construction field observations.
  • Other design/engineering tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Architecture.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience on industrial/transit facility and civil engineering design projects.
  • Strong background in multi-discipline design including architecture, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and fire protection.
  • Experience in cost control, scheduling, and risk management.
  • Competence in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Project.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to effectively work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must be a team player and a self-starter.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working on TTC, Metrolinx, CN, VIA, CP, and Translink projects.
  • Command of Revit and AutoCAD, and knowledge of SketchUp.
