We are seeking an instructor to teach in the School of Environment and Geomatics at Selkirk College. The successful applicant will have the education and experience to provide instruction in some or all of the available courses covering Introductory Wildlife Ecology, Ecosystem Based Management, Terrestrial Ecology, and Environmental Legislation courses in our programs.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver courses on the ecology and management of wildlife species in BC, including field and classroom labs related to standard sampling techniques.
  • Provide instruction to students.
  • Ensure effective safety procedures are applied as appropriate, particularly in field labs.
  • Develop and deliver teaching strategies and assessments that meet course outcomes and promote learning.
  • Evaluate students, including providing constructive and meaningful feedback to students.
  • Actively contribute to the college and the school, including participating in school and program meetings for all relevant schools.
  • Develop or update curriculum according to Selkirk College values, policy, and procedures.
  • Maintain positive relationships with colleagues and other members of college staff.
  • Engage in professional development activities.
  • Protect student information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the School Chair or Dean.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Experience with standard wildlife sampling techniques used in BC, sampling for biodiversity and vegetation related to wildlife use, ecology of wildlife species in BC, safety standards as applied to field and lab settings, demographic analysis, track identification, song identification of bird species, and common wildlife diseases.
  • Sound understanding of the fundamentals of ecology and wildlife management.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in-person course delivery experience, previous use of a learning management system like Moodle, demonstrated ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and academic abilities, and teaching students at the post-secondary level.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent classroom management skills.
  • Ability to contribute to school and/or college initiatives.
  • Provide personal experiences that build confident and imaginative learners ready to thrive in their community and in our dynamic world.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong competencies in working independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to continuous learning.

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Wildlife Ecology or a related field.
  • Two to three years of teaching experience in a post-secondary environment.
  • Industry wildlife experience is desired.
  • Experience working with and among indigenous communities is preferred.
  • Preferably a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the College of Applied Biologists.
  • Applicants with lesser education or experience may be considered for the available position.
  • Valid driver's license - class 4 preferred.
