Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join our team at Foresters Financial Services, Inc. as a key member of our legal department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality legal support and advice to our in-house lawyers, senior management, officers, and employees across Canada and the US.
  • Conduct legal research, identify legal issues and risks, and formulate and recommend legal strategies and solutions.
  • Draft legal opinions and advise on a comprehensive range of legal matters, including procurement and commercial contracts, general corporate commercial advice, litigation management, insurance and employment law, and laws relating to Fraternal Benefit Societies.
  • Contribute to an effective program of corporate governance compliance for Foresters and its subsidiaries by functioning in a corporate secretarial capacity as needed for Foresters Board Committees.
  • Manage external and internal legal resources, including needs analysis, resource allocation, and project monitoring.
  • Direct the work of paralegals assisting with various legal files and matters.
  • Litigation management and directing the work of external counsel on an as-needed basis.
  • Develop, promote, and deliver a program for internal client development and education to assist clients in performing their functions and to maximize law department resources.
  • Stay up-to-date with statutory developments and evolving jurisprudence in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Participate in Foresters employee development and community service programs.
Requirements
  • Five to twelve years of legal experience.
  • A subject matter expert in two or more areas of law.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to manage working partnerships with all levels of the organization and within the legal department.
  • Proficient with technology, legal research, and concise memo drafting.
  • Ability to communicate highly complex issues to people outside the legal profession.
  • Ability to identify potential sources of significant exposure, consequences, and risk mitigants.
  • Ability to identify the need and hire expert lawyers when issues require more extensive knowledge/experience or when internal legal resources are insufficient.
  • Creative and adaptable, able to adjust to changing priorities and direction.
