Job Overview

The Alberta Onsite Wastewater Management Association is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Strategic Director to lead the organization towards achieving its long-term goals. This pivotal leadership role is responsible for the overall strategic direction and operational management of the Association.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Develop and implement strategic plans that align with the Association's mission and goals.
  2. Lead and manage all operational aspects of the Association, ensuring effective processes are in place for efficiency and productivity.
  3. Adhere to the Association's Code of Conduct.
  4. Oversee project management initiatives to ensure timely completion of projects within budgetary constraints.
  5. Create and maintain positive relations with key stakeholders at all levels.
  6. Negotiate contracts and agreements that benefit the organization while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  7. Provide leadership and guidance to contracted staff, promoting a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  8. Develop membership and training initiatives to support long-term sustainability for the organization.
  9. Monitor organizational performance metrics and implement necessary changes to achieve desired outcomes.
  10. Financial risk management – collaborate with the accountant, auditor, and the Board Executive to adhere to financial controls and provide clear reporting on the state of the organization.
  11. Sit as an ex-officio member of all committees.
  12. Lead the creation of new policies and procedures to improve current documentation and record-keeping practices.
  13. Represent the Association at public events, meetings, and conferences to promote its mission and vision.

Requirements

  1. A minimum of 5 years of leadership experience, ideally working in the onsite wastewater industry, government agencies, and/or environmental health agencies.
  2. Strong working knowledge of the governance and financial function of an organization and have demonstrated experience reporting to Boards or key stakeholders as to the state of the organization.
  3. Post-secondary education in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health, Business Administration or related fields is an asset.
  4. Proven experience in process improvement methodologies to enhance operational efficiency.
  5. Strong leadership skills with a track record of managing diverse teams effectively.
  6. Excellent project management abilities with experience in overseeing multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  7. Demonstrated success in business development strategies that drive growth and sustainability.
  8. Exceptional negotiation skills to secure beneficial agreements for the organization.
  9. Strong interpersonal skills – particularly showing a tactful, diplomatic, and empathetic approach with diverse stakeholders.
  10. Effective communication, public presentation, and organizational skills are essential, as is working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of office software.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid remote work arrangement in Edmonton, AB T5S 1X3.
  • Flexible schedule with occasional weekend work.
