The Faculty of Arts & Science at OCAD University invites applications for the position of Sessional Instructor: Materials & Methods: Beadwork, which is part of the university's academic and strategic plan to drive positive impact, decolonization, indigenization, and equity.
About the Job
This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified individual to teach a course on materials and methods in beadwork. The successful applicant will have a terminal degree in art or a related discipline and/or equivalent professional experience.
About the Course
The course, INVC-3003: Materials & Methods: Beadwork, is a 0.5 credit course that addresses the history of beads specific to the Haudenosaunee (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora) with an emphasis on cultural and social changes from the 15th century to today.
The course will cover wampum as used by the First Nations of the Eastern Woodlands for ceremony, diplomatic treaties, decoration, and stories. European glass beads were introduced as trade goods, and the Haudenosaunee produce beaded souvenirs for tourist trade. Sewing beads to a surface with a needle and thread using appliqué, edging, and raised beadwork techniques will be explored and applied to the creation of original work.
About the Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching and teaching-related activities, including course outline development, studio preparation and delivery, grading, mid-term evaluations, and final evaluations/reviews. They will also be responsible for health and safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines.
About the Qualifications
- A terminal degree in art or a related discipline and/or equivalent professional experience;
- Experience teaching at the post-secondary level is considered an asset;
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills;
- Demonstrated leadership and experience promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.
About the Compensation
The sessional compensation includes a per-course pay scale with a salary level of $6,871.00 (per 0.5 credit course) plus 7% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act.
