Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Counsel to join our Family Law team at Legal Aid Ontario. As a Senior Counsel, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality legal services to vulnerable clients in family law and child protection matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as counsel of record for certificate eligible clients in family law and child protection matters.
  • Represent clients in family law and child protection cases through all stages of litigation, including trial.
  • Provide brief, limited-scope virtual and in-person legal services and summary advice for eligible family law clients.
  • Serve as a mentor to Legal Aid duty counsel, staff lawyers, and private bar roster lawyers.
  • Participate in community outreach presentations and projects.
  • Participate in legal education initiatives.
  • Ensure high-quality legal work in a cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain conflict lists, record data, and produce reports as required.

Requirements

  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario with a minimum of 5 years of family law experience.
  • Fluency in French and/or other languages is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience representing clients in family law and child protection matters, with advanced knowledge of relevant legislation.
  • Demonstrated experience providing legal services to vulnerable client groups, including Indigenous, racialized, and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Legal Aid Workers, staff lawyers, paralegals, and Managers.
  • Knowledge of the Legal Aid Services Act and Regulations, and a strong understanding of LAO as a public service agency.
  • Ability to use latest communication technologies, including tablets and smartphones, and video conferencing platforms.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with computer software, including DivorceMate, CaseLines, and Microsoft Office.
