Job Summary:

Fort William First Nation is seeking a skilled Programmer for Indigenous Heritage to join our team at Fort William Historical Park. As a Programmer, you will play a key role in sharing the story of the Anishinaabe people of the Great Lakes Region by developing and presenting educational programming to schools, tourists, and other groups.

About the Role:

We are committed to building an inclusive and diverse workforce representative of our community. As a Programmer, you will assist the Indigenous Heritage Program Coordinator in:

  • Researching and developing Indigenous heritage programs and activities;
  • Maintaining and evaluating historical interpretations, dramas, tours, special events, education, and outreach programs;
  • Portraying roles in traditional and historic-inspired clothing and participating in historical dramatizations, festivals, and artisan demonstrations;
  • Providing technical direction to students and information to staff, stakeholders, and community interest groups.

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, history, and perspective;
  • Knowledge of or the desire to learn about natural history, period hunting, fishing, and trapping techniques, as well as fabrication, construction, and aesthetic techniques pertaining to relevant Indigenous material culture;
  • Written or verbal skills necessary to share program content and convey key program information;
  • Knowledge of or the desire to learn traditional harvesting practices such as birch bark, spruce root, sphagnum moss, and more.
