About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Accountant to join our team at Fort McKay First Nation. As a key member of our Finance Department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial records and reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in monthly closings and preparation of financial statements, ensuring timely and accurate completion of tasks.
  • Support the annual and monthly financial planning and reporting process, working closely with the Finance Director and department leaders to achieve budgetary goals.
  • Reconcile vendor accounts, resolving any discrepancies or issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform monthly bank statement reconciliations, identifying and resolving any outstanding issues.
  • Monitor and resolve bank issues, including fee anomalies, to ensure seamless financial operations.
  • Prepare tax computations and returns, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and deadlines.
  • Prepare and submit payroll remittances for processing, ensuring accurate and timely payment of employee wages.
  • Prepare journal entries for monthly and year-end closings, ensuring accurate and complete financial records.
  • Prepare monthly reports for department managers and external stakeholders, providing valuable insights into financial performance.
  • Review invoice batches on a weekly basis, ensuring all invoices are posted in a timely manner and correctly coded and costed according to budgets.
  • Mentor more junior accountants, providing work direction and technical accounting guidance to support their professional development.
  • Assist with the reconciliation of balance sheet accounts as required for the annual external audits, ensuring accuracy and compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Reconcile credit card accounts, ensuring accurate and timely completion of tasks.
  • Ensure daily processes for Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable are completed in a timely manner and in accordance with accounting principles.
Key Requirements
  • Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance.
  • Accounting designation (CA, CGA, or CMA) is required.
  • Minimum of five years' experience in cost accounting in a computerized accounting environment.
  • Knowledge and experience with accounting software such as ACCPAC.
  • Strong knowledge of standards and best practices pertaining to accounting.
  • Proficient in various computer software applications, including advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Excel, Word, Outlook) and finance modules.
  • Experience working in an Indigenous community, including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions, and values, is considered an asset.
  • Ability to speak Cree or Dene is considered an asset.
  • Valid class 5 Driver's License and Clean Driver's Abstract Required.
