About the Role

Smith + Andersen is seeking a highly skilled Legal Counsel to join its shared services team in Toronto. As a key member of the team, you will provide legal support to the company's offices across Canada, including negotiating project agreements, advising on matters under provincial construction lien legislation, managing claims, and providing day-to-day legal support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and negotiate legal agreements and other documents to protect the firm's legal and business interests and mitigate risk.
  • Provide legal support to project teams and leadership, including compliance with relevant laws and regulations and risk management across the Canadian provinces.
  • Draft, edit, and manage existing contract templates.
  • Manage project-related claims at different stages of the dispute resolution process, including insurance claims and litigation.
  • Work collaboratively with leadership, shared services, project teams, and external stakeholders.
  • Improve existing processes, documentation, and practices in the best interest of the firm.
Requirements
  • Five to seven years of broad experience in commercial and construction law obtained in private practice or in-house.
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound legal judgement, problem-solving skills in a variety of business and commercial situations.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple and at times competing priorities.
  • Proven ability to work independently and with minimal supervision and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
