The primary responsibility of the Lead Estimator is to oversee the development of labor and material estimates for Seaspan and to ensure that any change orders initiated throughout the project lifecycle are accurately estimated and coordinated. The individual in this role also plays a crucial part in the mentoring program for new and trainee estimators within the estimating department at Seaspan. While this position does not have direct reports, it is essential for coordinating and delegating Naval Surface Fleet tasks to the estimating team in collaboration with the Estimating Manager and the Commercial Manager.
Note: This position requires full on-site presence.
Key Responsibilities- Prepares labor and material estimates, including all change orders as directed, based on thorough evaluations of specifications, terms and conditions, detailed or outline specifications, drawings, sketches, or verbal instructions.
- Gathers pricing from suppliers while consulting with shipyard personnel, contractors, regulatory bodies, and trades, utilizing both general and specific knowledge gained from past experiences to determine labor hours and material needs, ultimately calculating the total project costs.
- Assigns tasks related to Naval Surface Fleet projects to the estimating team.
- Reviews completed estimates from the estimating team for accuracy and thoroughness.
- Engages in negotiations regarding change orders with customer representatives as necessary.
- Maintains communication with owners, customer representatives, and project managers before, during, and after vessel refits to ensure a clear understanding of the project scope and to identify any additional potential work.
- Researches specialized products, equipment, and systems, comparing sources and providing relevant information to supply chain management, while obtaining necessary information and costs.
- Evaluates the suitability of items for the specific project.
- Assesses the scope and feasibility of specifications and owner expectations by reviewing, discussing, and clarifying details, visiting vessels, and incorporating specification amendments to ensure accuracy and completeness of estimates.
- Provides management with summaries of estimated labor and material, along with overviews of work content, including aspects requiring special consideration regarding complexity, time requirements, and availability of products or services.
- Investigates and recommends cost-saving measures for change order work.
- Fosters positive relationships with customers through effective pre- and post-contract communication, ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Offers leadership and guidance in internal departmental mentorship.
- Performs all other duties as required.
- Completion of Grade 12 education, along with a post-secondary degree from a recognized technical institution or trade certification.
- A minimum of 8 years of experience in an estimating role within the marine industry.
- Experience with large government contracts is considered advantageous.
- Demonstrated commitment to exemplary business ethics, integrity, confidentiality, and honesty in all situations.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written, including familiarity with marine terminology.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Exceptional analytical, mathematical, problem-solving, decision-making, negotiating, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to produce accurate estimates.
- Capability to read technical drawings and interpret contract and tender documentation requirements.
- Ability to impart knowledge and experience to less experienced individuals.
- Understanding of applicable rules and regulations in the marine industry.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Familiarity with corporate policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of various shipyard trades and marine equipment and systems.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet applications.

The estimated salary for this position ranges from $108,000 to $132,000, with the final offer determined by the company based on various factors, including the candidate's skills, experience, and internal equity considerations.
