About the Role

The Senior Estimator will play a critical role in the preparation of labour and material estimates for Victoria Shipyards, ensuring that change orders are effectively estimated and coordinated throughout the project life cycle. This position is an integral part of the mentoring program for trainee and new hire estimators, providing leadership and direction in internal departmental mentorship.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Prepare accurate labour and material estimates, including change orders, based on evaluations of owner-supplied specifications, terms and conditions, and detailed or outline specifications.
  2. Solicit pricing from suppliers, consulting with shipyard personnel, contractors, regulatory bodies, and trades to determine labour hour and material requirements and calculate overall costs for the project.
  3. Assign work related to Naval Surface Fleet projects to the estimating team, ensuring effective coordination and communication.
  4. Review completed estimates for accuracy and completeness, providing feedback and guidance to the estimating team.
  5. Negotiate change orders with customer representatives as required, ensuring a clear understanding of the scope of work and identifying potential additional work.
  6. Communicate with owners/customer representatives and project managers to ensure a clear understanding of the scope of work and to identify potential additional work.
  7. Research specialized products, equipment, and systems, providing relevant information to the supply chain management team and obtaining pertinent information and cost.
  8. Assess the suitability of items for the project, ensuring accuracy and completeness of estimates.
  9. Assess scope and practicality of specifications and owner expectations, reviewing, discussing, and clarifying details, visiting vessels, and incorporating specification amendments to ensure accurate and complete estimates.
  10. Provide department management with summaries of estimated labour and material, as well as overviews of work content, including work requiring special consideration.
  11. Investigate and make recommendations for cost savings for change order work.
  12. Maintain positive relationships with customers through pre- and post-contract communication, ensuring customer satisfaction.
  13. Provide leadership and direction in internal departmental mentorship.
Requirements
  1. Completion of Grade 12 education, plus a Post-secondary Degree from a recognized technical institution or trade certification.
  2. A minimum of 8 years of experience in an estimating role related to the marine industry.
  3. Experience with large government contracts is considered an asset.
  4. Demonstration of exemplary business ethics, integrity, confidentiality, and honesty in all situations.
  5. Excellent communication skills in the English language, both verbal and written, including knowledge of correct marine terminology.
  6. A strong sense of customer service orientation.
  7. Excellent analytical, mathematical, problem-solving, decision-making, negotiating, and interpersonal skills.
  8. Proven ability to prepare accurate estimates.
  9. Ability to read technical drawings and interpret contract and tender documentation requirements.
  10. Ability to transfer knowledge and experience to less experienced individuals.
  11. Knowledge of applicable rules and regulations in the marine industry.
  12. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  13. Knowledge of applicable corporate policies and procedures.
  14. Familiarity with all shipyard trades and knowledge of marine equipment and systems.
  15. Excellent time management and ability to work well under pressure.
  16. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and the Internet.
