About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and culturally sensitive individual to join our team as a Cultural Wellness Coordinator at Kílala Lelum Health and Wellness Cooperative. This is an exciting opportunity to work with our community to promote health and wellness equity in the Downtown Eastside (DTES).

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish Relationships: Build trust and rapport with new and existing community members, Elders, and Knowledge Holders to provide culturally safe and empathetic support.
  • Care and Support: Assist Elders and Knowledge Holders in their work, ensuring their wellness is prioritized and their cultural practices are respected.
  • Program Delivery: Assist in the planning, organization, and facilitation of cultural outings, events, ceremonies, and virtual initiatives for community members and staff.
  • Community Engagement: Foster engagement with the Cultural Wellness program by facilitating cultural activities and information-sharing in partner programs.
  • Logistical Support: Manage program equipment, maintain clinical and cultural materials, and perform basic administrative duties.
  • Relationship Building: Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Indigenous health and social services partner organizations, local First Nations, and wider Indigenous communities.
  • Healing Spaces: Maintain and care for healing spaces at Kílala Lelum, including shared spaces where medicines are grown or kept.
  • Cultural Knowledge Sharing: Learn about medicines, cultural protocols, and other Indigenous teachings and share that knowledge with community members and staff.
  • Community Partnerships: Strengthen relationships with the host nations of Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh to recognize our responsibilities.
Requirements
  • Cultural Competence: Familiarity working with Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Holders, knowledge of cultural protocols, and Indigenous approaches to wellness.
  • Leadership and Facilitation: Experience leading and facilitating group sessions, with a desire to continue developing these skills.
  • Education and Experience: Minimum Post-Secondary Diploma or equivalent, with a preference for social services, community health, or Indigenous studies. Equivalent learning experiences, especially in cultural spaces and relationships, are considered and encouraged.
  • Work Experience: Minimum one year of work experience in a health or social service environment that serves Indigenous community members and/or communities with multiple barriers to health and wellness equity.
  • Skills and Abilities: Ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage aggressive behavior, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques. Excellent organizational skills, time management, and computer skills are also required.
